Prayer Corner

We live in a “Me” world. Or at least the richest nations do. Think about it for a minute. Where have your prayers been lately as we face our countries economic crisis? Where have your thoughts, concerns been? Have they been with the hungry, the poor, and the most disenfranchised of our world? The Miracle of Life from Lifeless Clay

Sermon given on February 13, 2011 for the Sunday of Blessing of the Bowls, Empty Bowls STEP fundraiser, at Wooddale Lutheran Church by Pastor Tim Rauk.

Isn’t it amazing that out of THIS, a hunk of clay, we can make THIS, a bowl, and THIS, a chalice, and THIS a plate. If you just take clay, and mold it into the shape you want, let it dry, and then try putting something wet into it, it will fall apart. But if you take the clay, mold it into the shape you want, and then apply high heat, it becomes stronger, and very usable. They if you apply a coating of various metal oxides called glazes, and apply high heat again, it becomes colorful and even more useable. You can create art, and/or make a whole host of practical things, like bowls to hold food, vases to hold flowers, and in any parts of the world us clay jars have been used carrying water for millenia. Clay, shaped and fired, is one of the most ancient human creations there is. Going way back to prehistoric days, people used THIS, clay, to make THIS, bowls.

But here’s something even more amazing about this lump of clay. THIS clay is what you and I are made of.
